Cooling without Air-conditioning
Malta Symposium, 25-26 June 2009
St James Cavalier, Valletta
In recent years, both research and new installations of Passive and Hybrid Downdraught Cooling have been carried out worldwide and a few pioneering and seminal buildings have highlighted the advantages of the integration of PHDC systems as an alternative to mechanical cooling. Research into this area has also attracted the support of the European Commission which has backed the current ‘Passive Downdraught Evaporative Cooling (PHDC)’ research project into passive cooling for non-domestic buildings.
As part of this EU funded project, a unique opportunity now presents itself in Malta for architects, engineers, and members of the construction industry and the public sector, to attend a unique event at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta. The two day event will focus on the more recent developments and applications in the field of passive and hybrid downdraught cooling in buildings around the world.

Hans Ibelings
This month, the fourth edition of Architecture Nights (AN09), will feature Hans Ibelings, architectural historian and editor/publisher of A10 new European architecture, a bimonthly pan-European magazine. Rather than reporting on the latest undertakings of the all-too familiar big names that crop up in all the architecture journals, A10 casts its net more widely to take in the many other interesting things that are happening in the old continent, devoting equal attention to the architectural production in Western, Central and Eastern Europe. With clear and informative reporting, A10 presents new buildings and projects by tomorrow's stars, forgotten masters and as yet unknown talents.
