kamra logo Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Kamra tal-Periti will be held on Friday, 10th December 2010. KTP is accepting nominations for the election of Council members.
Of special interest is the proposed "What are you doing out there?" presentation that will take place during the AGM. This is intended to be a short presentation of works and projects by five periti. The presentation should preferably be in powerPoint format. If you are interested in making such a presentation to your colleagues it would be appreciated if you could fill in the form and forward it to the Kamra.

anniversary dinner picture Celebrating 90 years of service to the profession

The Kamra tal-Periti was officially established by Government Notice No 202 of the 12th June 1920 under the signature of the Hon Edgar Bonavia, Acting Lieutenant-Governor and Chief Secretary to Government. This followed the approval by the Council of Government on the 5th July, 1919 of The Architects Ordinance, 1919 which was assented to by the Governor on the 25th July, 1919.

The Kamra tal-Periti is holding a Celebration Dinner to mark the 90th Anniversary of its establishment, at the Dragonara Point Ballroom, Westin Dragonara Resort, St Julians on Friday, 26th November 2010. The event will start with pre-dinner drinks at 20.00 hrs with dinner being served at 20.30 hrs. Dress Code is Lounge.

During the Celebration Dinner, our guest speaker, Dr Mark-Anthony Falzon, will be delivering a short talk titled If you can't be an astronaut, or an architect, try anthropology

Governance and the City.

To celebrate the 2010 World Day of Architecture, with the theme "Better Cities Better lives. Sustainable by design," the Kamra tal-Periti is organising a lecture and discussion session entitled Governance and the City.

The session, continues on the Kamra's commitment to the need to improve urban quality in the Maltese Islands, as manifested in its 2007 publication The Urban Challenge. The lecture will be delivered by the renowned Spanish architect Professor Josep Acebillo, one of the key figures behind the transformation of Barcelona over the last two decades and currently CEO of Barcelona Regional, the Metropolitan Agency for the strategic development of urban projects and infrastructure of Barcelona.

What benefits for Malta?

Further to the recent parliamentary debate on the merits of Structure Planning and Spatial Planning to planning in the Maltese Islands, the Kamra tal-Periti in conjunction with the Chamber of Planners organized a public debate on the applicability of these two planning approaches to the Maltese context and their particular suitability to the requirements of the Maltese built environment.
Dr Paul Gauci, a perit and urban planner, gave a background history on the evolution of the two planning approaches, following which the floor was open to a public debate.

Contemporary Mediterranean Architecture
Nabil Gholam

Nabil Gholam studied architecture at the École d'Architecture in Paris-Villemin and pursued a Masters in Urban Planning at Columbia University (New York). After starting his career with the renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, Gholam set up ngª in 1994 in Beirut. Since its foundation, ngª has been at the forefront of architecture and planning in the Mediterranean and Arab world. This lecture focused on the practice's recent works with a particular emphasis on issues of relevance to the Mediterranean culture and climate. 19.00 at the Aula Magna, Valletta Campus, Old University Building, St Paul Street Valletta. Architecture: From Sustainability to Environscape
Luca F.M.Fabris [Politecnico di Milano, Italy]

Luca Maria Francesco Fabris PhD (1966), is a journalist, an architect, and assistant Professor in Architectural Technologies and Environmental Design at the Department BEST of the Politecnico di Milano (Technical University of Milan), Italy, where he has been teaching since 1997. He’s coordinator of the ‘Project’ area of the monthly review COSTRUIRE (RCS Media Group – www.costruire.it) and technical editor of the ‘Environscapes’ series published by Maggioli Editore (www.maggioli.it). He is a Visiting professor at European, American and Asian Universities, including the University of Malta. His research and activity focuses on environmental sustainability and compatible technologies related to contemporary built environment and landscape. Further information can be downloaded below:

Civil Engineering Encounters

Following the success of Architecture Nights, the Kamra tal-Periti is now embarking on a new series of events that will focus more on the Civil Engineering aspect of the profession. These activities will be held under the general title of “Civil Engineering Encounters” (CEE).
The first of these Encounters featured a presentation on Seismicity and Earthquake Engineering with a focus on the Aquila Earthquake of April 2009 and with speakers from the University of Malta and a speaker from ENEA, the Italian National Authority for New Technology, Energy and Sustainable Development.

kamra logo AMENDMENTS TO RENT LAW

The Rent Law was amended last year and the amendments came into effect on the 1st January 2010. In view of this, the Kamra tal-Periti organised an information seminar to explain these amendments and how these may be interpreted and viewed critically. The valuation of properties for rental purposes is one of the professional tasks Periti are entrusted with so it is essential to remain updated on these issues.
Details on the seminar which was held on the 5th February are found on the flier below.
